 Let Me Be Seen: Short Story Publishing

and Character-Building

How do you get published?  How do you start a short story?  You need a cover letter for that?  This lecture and workshop will cover how to publish short literary works, such as short stories, for folks of any background or field of study.  Learn how to create submissions, write cover letters, and choose the right place to get published.  You will also craft your own story with some simple character writing exercises.

Where is the Love: Romance Writing and Valentine Poetry

This interactive lecture and workshop event will describe what romance is and its place in romantic writing. Famous romantic poets will be featured along with their work, such as William Blake and John Donne. Writing exercises will challenge participants to describe complex emotions, utilize extended metaphors, and woo a valentine with hand-crafted writing. Exact details of event pending.

           What a World: Fantasy Writing and World-Building

This interactive lecture and workshop event will cover fantasy world-building and how to make the most of a fantasy setting. Topics covered may include: making a world revolve around one premise, scaling a world and the powers within it, and making use of inventory within a scene or larger narrative.  Examples of all narrative forms, from manga to novels to animated series, will be used in fueling the participant understanding of fantasy-writing strategies. Just Be Me: Creative Nonfiction and Writing Yourself

This interactive lecture and workshop event will help participants understand the genre of creative nonfiction. The history of creative nonfiction, and the various forms it can take, will be described and supplemented with examples. Writing exercises will make participants more comfortable with personal writing, utilizing techniques such as in media res or writing personal narratives in the third person. Anime and Artistry: The Gripping Tale of Japanese Narratives

This interactive lecture and workshop event will cover how Japanese media, such as anime, has managed to become popular in the West by providing compelling narrative and character. References to Japanese mythology, such as “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter,” and modern manga, such as One Piece, will be referenced in detail. Participants will be challenged to pull from techniques, such as integration of culture, into personal writing. Exact details of event pending.

Almost Human: Horror Writing and the Uncanny

What makes your favorite scary stories and horror films so frightening? What triggers that unsettling feeling you so desperately crave? Horror is rooted in the human condition, spanning literature, psychology, and history in unexpected ways; fear experts Sigmund Freud and Edgar Allan Poe would both agree. In this lecture and writing workshop hosted by Mr. Christian Loeffler, English lecturer and horror story writer, uncover the origins of your own gut-wrenching fear.
